MarktoMarket Regional Corporate Finance Breakfast Seminar: Birmingham
Regional Breakfast seminar
On the 19th of June, MarktoMarket hosted its third regional breakfast seminar of the year, this time located in Birmingham. Doug Lawson, CEO and Co-Founder of MarktoMarket, was scheduled to join Roy Farmer, Corporate Finance Partner at Dains however, due to a last minute illness, had to pull out and Kathryn Stevenson, Senior Account Executive at MarktoMarket took Doug’s place. Below is a summary of the discussion that took place throughout the morning. You can view the video from the seminar here.
Key themes
Below are some of the key themes and observations that emerged from the breakfast seminar:
The West Midlands might be the heart of the Industrial Revolution but it is an outdated perception that the strength of the region is still in the engineering and industrial sectors. It’s heritage still plays a strong part but there’s lots going on in other sectors such as tech and healthcare.
Appetite for funding in the region is strong, particularly from regional investors, but the hurdles to accessing capital are a little higher.
Interest from Swedish acquirers is increasing, especially for SME businesses that “fit the mould” (attractive profit margins etc..).
The General Election brings an element of uncertainty – particularly with respect to any potential tax changes in the October budget. It is expected that this will play a part in deal activity but it is not yet apparent how much of an effect this will have.
There is a lot of PE activity in the accountancy sector with ~20 platform businesses out there BUT not all platforms have the same model so the market isn’t as overcrowded as it first seems.
Thank you to all those who attended and a special thanks to Roy Farmer for joining the panel.
